This book entitled Interior Decorating Etiquette is written by Jasmine Jean. Sadly I could not find any information about the author neither any of her other works. Just like most of the things in this world, interior designing is also bounded by rule. This book carries a collection of information and guideline for each design concept. The main point of this book is actually to show the contrast and the similarities between each living culture. As we know, there are absolutely more than one culture there outside which make the design of every place is unique with its own cultural influence.
The author believes that interior design is more than merely arranging furniture. To her, it is more like a form of art where she could create a functional space that matches with the user's behavior. While interior decorating, is when you do not do the design but only making thing leaning more towards the clients' preference. Interior decorating is more to the 'finishing' steps. Well even tough both are two different things, it is all aiming on the wellness of the clients, and I agree that a good interior space can really affect the emotion of people living within.
This book gives idea on the ups and down of interior decorating job. This profession could be fun if you have a professional interior design background, very creative and artistic. People from other design department such as costume or graphic are welcomed! The downfall of this job is actually the difficulty to charge on the service and the tendency to depends on the sales of product for benefit.Tho book also tells a little the criteria on being a good interior decorator, which I feel almost the same as being an interior designer: broad knowledge, professionalism, and know the client's demand. In this industry, client is king because we are creating something from client's request. In this interior decorating field, one must know the basic of marketing to connect the client to the suppliers.
Next, the book is filled with explanation on variety of concept and culture-inspired design: Chinese, Spanish, French, American, British, Neo-Classical and so on. Each style is introduced and given opinion by the author. There are also complete guide on the furniture and ornament style that matches the characteristic of the culture, the layout of the furniture, the fengshui. The explanation also comes with the tips on applying the concept and developing it to suit in current situation.
Overall I rate this as good book. It is very well written and easy to understand thanks to the graphic inside the book. From this book I've realized that it is important to shower myself with knowledge and updates on the furniture to keep up with the client's demand. It is also essential to practice and develop a good sense in balancing items, color and style. Interior decorating is interesting and I think it has chances on becoming my alternative occupation.
